Dual gas engines
We are pioneers in the use of natural gas and have invested more than 500 million euros in eleven ships that have dual natural gas engines and are also prepared to consume 100% CO2-neutral renewable gases such as biomethane and green hydrogen blends of up to 25%. We also support research projects on biofuels and synthetic fuels, considered to be the energies of the future.

Electric ferries: 'Cap de Barbaria' and 'Rusadir'
In 2023, on the Ibiza-Formentera route, we launched the first electric passenger and cargo ferry in Spain with zero emissions on port approaches and stays, the 'Cap de Barbaria'. The vessel not only streamlines operations, but also represents a step forward in terms of sustainability in maritime connections between the Pityusic Islands, as it increases eco-efficiency by 60% compared to the previous ferry. The electrically powered 'Cap de Barbaria' uses lithium batteries and can be adapted to green hydrogen in the future. We also purchased the 'Rusadir', an innovative and sustainable cruise ferry equipped with an electric propulsion system powered by dual natural gas engines. It operates on the Malaga-Melilla route and has a wide variety of on-board accommodation and services.
Baleària's Plan: A Sustainable FleetSustainable initiatives
At Baleària we are committed to playing an active role in the field of sustainability. We are aware of how complex the challenge of achieving zero emissions by 2050 is, but we are convinced that sustainable mobility is the only possible way to really help care for the planet. To achieve this goal, for years we have been collaborating with governments, public and private organizations in a number of financial and human resources, in addition to our ongoing participation in various areas of research and redesign related to ships, energy efficiency and the use of new technologies applied to the fleet. In 2023, we became the first Spanish shipping company to obtain the prestigious Green Marine Europe environmental certification.

Innovation
We look to cross-cutting digitalisation to drive growth and competitiveness
Fleet Control Tower
We have our own Fleet Control Tower, which not only monitors a large amount of crucial data in real time, including location, punctuality and speed, but also analyses detailed information from our sensorised vessels, such as consumption and emissions levels.
This tool makes it easier for captains and chief engineers to make decisions, and intensifies information flows to ensure optimum control of actions on board.

The most digital voyage
For years we have been developing digital solutions and apps that facilitate the customer's interaction with the company and improve their experience from the moment they make a booking. To this end, we have digitalised our on-board services, resulting in the creation of so-called smart ships. These offer features such as on-demand digital entertainment, real-time viewing of pet travel via webcams, and digital access to ships and accommodation, as well as other facilities.
In addition, we have incorporated a chatbot and the Smart B portal, as well as the use of WhatsApp as a way of communicating with our customers.

Digital cargo model
Digitalisation has allowed us to modernise and optimise our cargo model, making it more efficient and faster, and providing significant benefits to the goods transport cycle.
Consequently, we have launched a website exclusively for cargo customers, where we offer greater autonomy for managing bookings, as well as better logistics planning, thanks to the availability of real-time information. On top of all this, our operations managers are equipped with digital tablets that provide them with detailed real-time information on boarding progress.
Our Baleària Carga app also allows drivers to get on board and access their accommodation without having to go to the ticket office, reducing paperwork, queues and waiting times.

25th Anniversary
A quarter of a century connecting people and linking regions
In 2023, we celebrated our 25th year of activity in the combined maritime transport of passengers, vehicles and goods. To celebrate, we produced the documentary 'A 25-year journey', which we premiered in front of 300 representatives from our different stakeholder groups. We also published a commemorative book featuring the most important events in our history, as well as interviews with people who have been key players and others who have witnessed our evolution. In addition, the Baleària Foundation organised the travelling art exhibition '25 years Baleària', which showcased how different artists from around the Mediterranean perceive Baleària.
