At Baleària, innovation, together with sustainability, is an essential part of its identity. For this reason, the shipping company continuously develops projects that put technology at the service of its customers.
A smart ship fleet
For some time, Baleària has aimed to operate a smart ship fleet to improve the onboard customer experience. In 2020, Baleària operated eight vessels with these features and planned to reach eleven in 2021. Through this, the shipping company seeks to offer customers a complete technological experience, encompassing services and innovations before, during and after the journey, from the sales process to boarding and the onboard experience.
The main features of these smart ships include the digitisation of all signage, access to cabins using a QR code that customers receive on their mobile phone, internet connectivity, a free WhatsApp service, pet video monitoring and on-demand digital entertainment, among others.
New smart terminal in Valencia
In addition, last year Baleària was awarded the contract to build and operate the new passenger terminal at the Port of Valencia. The project brings together two strategic pillars: digitisation and sustainability.
The intelligent terminal project (smart terminal) aims to set a benchmark for eco-efficiency, with comfortable and straightforward boarding. Sustainability will also be central to this new space through the use of the most efficient technologies with the lowest environmental impact. The terminal would be 100% self-sufficient in electricity generated from renewable energy sources (solar photovoltaic, wind, renewable hydrogen and biofuel) and would recycle all waste generated, demonstrating a clear commitment to the circular economy.

Big data to manage the fleet
Baleària is also working on big data and real-time data-driven decision-making, with the aim of becoming a data-driven company in the medium term. One of its most ambitious projects is the future control tower, which is already under development and will enable fleet operations and vessels to be managed more quickly and efficiently across different areas.
Preventive and predictive fleet maintenance will also be possible thanks to the analysis of technical data, while real-time monitoring of vessels from shore will make it possible to detect potential deviations from schedules.
Digitisation in freight transport
The shipping company is also committed to digitising freight transport services in order to streamline administrative work for its customers and save time in day-to-day operations. Technology solutions give freight customers greater autonomy in booking management, enable smoother port operations and support better logistics planning thanks to real-time information on equipment status.
