Baleària chairman Adolfo Utor has expressed great satisfaction at being awarded the tender for berth 3 at the Port of Tarifa, which will enable the shipping company to operate the Tarifa-Tangier Ville route for the next 15 years.
“The Baleària teams have worked extremely hard over the past few years to win this tender, submitting the most technologically advanced and environmentally sustainable technical project,” Utor said. He added: “We are the rightful winners and can be very proud of our success. We will devote ourselves fully to this new green corridor and work with all our stakeholders to turn the Tarifa-Tangier Ville route into an international benchmark for mobility, modernity and sustainability.”
Adolfo Utor also stated that, in keeping with Baleària’s commitment to the region, the shipping company “will act as a catalyst for the economy by strengthening local employment and offering all workers with experience on this route the opportunity to join our teams, so that together we can open a new chapter of optimism and progress”. The chairman also highlighted that, for the first time in decades, the route will be operated by a Spanish-flagged vessel. This will support the recruitment of both national and local professionals and significantly increase job opportunities for seafarers in the area.
Baleària plans to build two electric fast ferries, electrify the ports and install the charging system. The two electric catamarans will be built at the Spanish Armon shipyard in Gijón, with construction expected to take two and a half years. During this period, the shipping company will deploy two transitional fast ferries on the route: the Avemar Dos, which was re-engined in 2021 to improve its efficiency, and the Jaume I.
