Baleària, Spain’s leading shipping company for passenger and freight transport, will once again attend the International Logistics and Transport Exhibition in Barcelona 2024 (SIL), with its own stand covering more than 100 m2. The shipping company is thereby reaffirming its commitment to providing a reliable and sustainable service at the sector’s leading trade fair.
Georges Bassoul, Managing Director of Baleària, said: “The value proposition we are presenting at SIL is based on the punctuality, reliability and flexibility of our service. We want to make the most of our presence at the trade fair to exchange knowledge and market perspectives, and to continue creating synergies with our customers and stakeholders.” Bassoul highlighted the 7.4 million lane metres of freight transported by the shipping company last year, which “demonstrate Baleària’s crucial role in the economic development of the regions where it operates”. According to Bassoul, one of the keys to achieving “this record figure” is the company’s large, modern fleet: “It enables us to meet supply-chain deadlines and respond immediately to potential contingencies, ensuring service continuity.” The Managing Director also highlighted “Baleària’s ability to adapt to the complexities of logistics chains and the specific needs of each customer, as well as the expertise and professionalism of all our teams”.
Domestic and international routes
Between mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, Baleària operates six ferries (from the ports of Barcelona and Valencia to Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza) and supplements the service with two fast ferries. It also has six other vessels in the Balearic Islands, ensuring year-round inter-island services and providing additional capacity during the high season. This makes it the only operator offering a comprehensive service to the Balearic Islands. On routes to Melilla, where the company holds the public service contract, it operates from the ports of Almería, Málaga and Motril. In Ceuta, the shipping company operates the public service route with a ferry and supplements it with a fast ferry, providing up to ten daily services. In the Canary Islands, it operates two ferries, offering between three and four sailings a week. Finally, on its routes to Morocco, it offers ten daily services to Tanger Med from Algeciras, as well as a service from Motril, together with daily services between Almería and Nador. Last year, Baleària carried 71% of its freight on domestic routes, while its international services recorded growth of 33%.
Baleària is a key player in maritime freight transport, which accounts for 36% of its total revenue. Its main cargo categories include food and beverages, groupage, furniture, construction materials and industrial materials.
Digitalisation and sustainability
In recent years, the shipping company has also invested in the digitalisation of logistics and operations. Its dedicated freight web portal gives customers greater autonomy and improves logistics planning through real-time information, while digital boarding control streamlines port operations and reduces waiting times.
The shipping company is a sustainability benchmark thanks to its pioneering commitment to mobility powered by energy sources that are more respectful of the planet, with the aim of advancing decarbonisation. Baleària has 11 vessels equipped with dual-fuel engines, a versatile technology that allows them to operate using different fuels, such as natural gas today or renewable sources with net-zero CO2 emissions in the future. It is also involved in nine projects supported by European funding that promote the transition to clean energy and improve digital connectivity, and it was the first Spanish shipping company to receive the prestigious Green Marine Europe label.
